French supermarket offers Bitcoin discount

A Carrefour Express store located in Arcachon, a coastal town in southwestern France, offers a 20% discount to customers paying in Bitcoin. Carrefour is one of the largest supermarket chains in Europe, with thousands of locations across France and internationally. This particular franchise launched the offer in December 2025, applying it to all products in the store without restrictions. Store manager Christophe Martinez announced this initiative in a TikTok video explaining his desire to escape a currency that continuously devalues.

The store accepts Bitcoin payments via the Lightning Network, which enables fast and inexpensive transactions for daily purchases. This technology facilitates everyday cryptocurrency payments without relying on intermediaries like cards or centralised platforms for processing transactions. The Carrefour Express in Arcachon has accepted Bitcoin since at least autumn 2024, but this new 20% discount represents a first. This promotional offer distinguishes this franchised location from other Carrefour stores already accepting cryptocurrencies in France currently.

Bitcoin adoption accelerates in European retail

At least nine Carrefour stores in France now accept Bitcoin payments according to data compiled by bitcoin.fr website. Four establishments are located in Rouen in northern France, while others operate in Le Havre, Quincampoix, Elbeuf, Isneauville and Arcachon. A Carrefour Express in Rouen made headlines in September 2024 by becoming one of the first French supermarkets accepting Bitcoin.

Global Bitcoin adoption by merchants has tripled in one year with over 6,000 establishments now accepting this cryptocurrency worldwide. Other French businesses like Comptoir Brunet, a restaurant in Lyon, have also recently integrated Bitcoin into their payment systems successfully. The Lightning Network allows merchants to receive instant payments with very low fees compared to traditional card payment networks. This trend illustrates the progression of cryptocurrency adoption in the real economy beyond simple financial speculation and trading activities.
